No, it's not a space monster... the starry stuff in the background is ment to be detritus...
This is supposed to be a kraken, a big beast of the sea that once was feard by many sailors (and who knows, maybe ships have been attacked by gigant squids that started a party true"sailor story")
Krakens are usually resembled by octopus-, squid- or cuttlefish like creatures. I took inspertaion by a squids shapes, but besides from that, this things looks nothing like a squid.
This is acully a very old picture i found in a pile of papers. It had been created to get colored with photoshop, so i decided to scan the thing and finish off the long ago started work...
Ink and photoshop... yay...
"Release the Kraken!!"
I’m afraid I don’t remember what other ideas I had for it, being a quite old drawing, but I really like your echolocation suggestion!
Unless they have some strange articulation of some sort...?
It might captures whales with them, pulls them down and drowns them... it can probally stretch out its mouth. First it garbs the whale with the upper and lower teeth, when it got a quite steady grip, it shovels in the long "side-teeth" and locks its prey. The mouth part that the side-teeth are attached to is very flexible and can be both streched out and reangled, as the kraken has no bones. When I'm now looking at how the top of the head is shaped of the kraken, it could be made out of some soft tissue that easly register whales echolocation sounds. Something. Before humans killed off most of the whales, it should been possible for a cold blooded creature to feed on whales without whiping them out i think. Though, the kraken need to have some teeth further into the mouth for ripping off flesh too
